Crist
Crist is a group of Anglo-Saxon religious poems by Cynewulf. It is divided into Crist I, II, III. 1664 lines have been preserved and along with Beowulf it is a primary example of Anglo-Saxon literature.
"Eálá Earendel engla beorhtast
Ofer middangeard monnum sended."
Translated, the lines above mean:
"Hail Earendel brightest of angels,
over Middle Earth sent to men."
These two lines inspired Tolkien and he created Eärendil the Mariner, the brightest star in the sky that watches over the Men of Middle-earth.
